I was fortunate to be offered a position at a Pietermaritzburg Architectural firm, Brian Servant Partnership. Brian Servant was an amazing mentor, and I grew a lot in my career as well as a person during my time there. 

What types of projects do you enjoy doing the most and describe your design style?

I can design and style clients prefer but love the Natal Midlands “verandah style” together with a modern twist in terms of the internal layout and finishes. 

What is the process of getting plans done?

•Call me

•I will come meet you at your home or business and give you some options in terms of design and pricing.

•I will prepare sketch options (3D options if required)

•I’ll submit plans to the Municipality, and I’ll follow up until they are approved. 

Give us an example of a time you thought outside the box on a project. How did it prove useful?

I’m very good at alterations and additions and I am able to maximize space and create an architectural feeling of openness. A good example of this was a client who loved bird watching, I designed an internal space that opens out with glass sliding doors to create a feeling og being indoors and outdoors simultaneously.

Which is the project in your portfolio you are most proud of? 

I designed a multi-million Rand development, Donnybrook Police Station, Court House and Living Quarters. This turned out beautifully and added value to the community and area. 

What are some design styles found in the Midlands? 

The Natal Midlands farm-style houses are very common including some amazing redbrick heritage properties.

What do you think about the area? Is it worth investing money into doing improvements and alterations? 

Definitely. The Natal Midlands has seen an increase in development and demand as a result of many factors, amongst which are the amazing weather, beautiful views and landscapes as well as easy access to all amenities such as great schools and hospitals. Plus, the beach and berg are only an hour away in each direction. 

Do you see a mistake that is made often by homeowners that you would like to warn future clients to be careful of?

The most common mistake homeowners make is to do additions on the cheap. This can result in poor workmanship by inexperienced contractors. Leaks and damp etc., often occur. Additionally the holistic look of their property decreases in potential value as a result - as competent purchasers are wise to those “quick fix/cheap” solutions. 

What do you love about the Midlands?

The people in the Midlands are amazing and the lifestyle suits my design style.
